The Tallangatta and District Heritage Group have been waiting for more than 30 years to progress their ideas for recognition of the town that moved in the 1950s.

Towong Shire Council has facilitated a grant through Heritage Victoria to enable the group to work with a professional consultant to develop a significance assessment of the 1950s heritage collection and an extensive steam engine collection.

Desmond Kennard has been appointed by Council as a leading specialist in the planning, development and management of museums and collections. Since the early 1970s Desmond has held various senior positions in several major Australian museums including that of Chief Executive Officer for the Sydney Maritime Museum, General Manager of Powerprice, Executive Director of Sovereign Hill and Director of the Australian Bicentennial Exhibition.

"We are absolutely delighted to have Desmond work with us to complete the 1950s significance assessment for the town that moved. It was a tremendous engineering feat and it had a huge impact on the lives of so many people. We have something very special here that needs to be captured and shared," said Jean Merbach, Secretary of the Tallangatta and District Heritage Group.

As part of the significance assessment process, Desmond Kennard will meet with many local personalities for an insight into the 1950s moving experience. Desmond will review old documents including the 1956 planning scheme, housing plans and conditions, historic photographs, the history of the local butter factory, mining, and the immigration impacts of the move. The assessment will also assess existing computer records, a collections policy and address exhibition opportunities and scope for public access.

"We are really looking forward to the brainstorming sessions and an opportunity to put our ideas forward in an official plan. With a bit of luck it will also assist us with future funding opportunities and support," Jean said.
