Corryong is the heart of the Upper Murray. Located in the foothills of the Heritage listed Snowy Mountains; it is one of the few places left where the environment is true to all of Mother Nature’s gifts. The environment is pure, the rivers and streams run fresh and clean, and the air is significantly cleaner than metropolitan and large regional cities areas. More than 3,000,000 kgs of Carbon Monoxide and 64 identified substances of pollutants are released into the environment in the heart of the Melbourne CBD each year. So escape the city hustle and bustle and take a short break to the pure country in the foothills of the Heritage listed Snowy Mountains; the Australian Alps. The human story of the Snowy Mountains and the Murray River dates back hundreds of years when the indigenous people used the region as their home, to gather, hunt and celebrate their way of life. It was no doubt a perfect place then, and is just as beautiful today. Learn more about indigenous life at the Corryong Man from Snowy River Museum or simply tour the region to gain a fresh perspective and understanding on how this great eco-system works for all man-kind. It is important to recognise our past, and preserve what we have for future generations; a pure environment. The people are beautiful, the scenery is beautiful, and once you have experienced the pure life and holidaying experience of the Upper Murray, you will be here to stay. This is a common statement received from travellers who have visited and enjoyed the natural environmental delights of the Upper Murray. One of the many ways to enjoy the pristine environment is to hire a canoe from the Upper Murray Tourist Park of Tintaldra or Upper Murray Resort of Walwa. Paddle along the upper reaches of the Murray River, dip your toes or run your fingers through the cool flowing water, relax and unwind along the Murray near Corryong. Seriously, take off your shoes and try this liberating experience! The upper reaches section of the Murray River is rarely promoted but rather protected so it will remain the only part of the Murray River system that is still clean, so look after this special place when you decide to visit this summer. The pure end of the Murray is located approximately 1 hours drive east of Albury / Wodonga. You may opt to take a new drive along the Murray River Road from Bellbridge, or alternatively travel along the Murray Valley Highway via Tallangatta and Corryong. The Murray River and Snowy Mountain region is the perfect summer retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday working life, and long hot summer days and nights. The upper reaches of the Murray River is one of few eco-friendly locations left where you can still see the beautiful river stones that line the bottom of the Murray River, and on a good day, you may even spot a fish or two. You will also delight when you see the kaleidoscope of colour that exuberates from our dear feathered friends that soar and play with their reflections along the mirrored surface of the magnificent Murray River. This is the life that we all dream of, the holiday that enables us to get back in touch with Mother Natures call. You can camp at one of the 53 free camping locations, stay in one of the many Caravan Parks along the river or book a cabin at the Upper Murray Resort or the many quaint guest houses like the old Mt. Alfred School near Walwa; fully self contained with brilliant views and a real sense of escape. While enjoying the pure environment, why not put your best foot forward and enjoy a bush walk along Burrowe Pine Mountain - Australia’s largest monolith in the Southern Hemisphere; a place of natural beauty, magnificent granite outcrops, and inspiration. Do not forget your camera! Cudgewa Falls is another of many great walks and picnic spots that will enable you to enjoy the natural and pure environmental experience. So paddle a canoe, take a great bushwalk, cycle, or alternatively take a leisurely drive but remember to stop, feel the breeze in your hair, smell the eucalyptus of the Australian bush, bend your knees and to observe some of the most beautiful flora and fauna, and admire the abundant birdlife of the Snowy Mountains and Murray River eco systems. It’s a magical place! Take home the memories, the new rejuvenated you and, most of all, take your rubbish home with you too and keep it pure. Canoe Hire
