Spring racing ignites the passion and enthusiasm for country racing in Victoria. It is also a time to start making preparations for a heart stopping and winning time at the Towong Cup; a classic country race meeting with all the trimmings, festivities and fine fillies from far and near.

Milliners prepare to gather the finest feathers, flowers, and fabrics to create the fantabulous fascinator or hat; a skill that requires finesse, vision and a total understanding of the day, the atmosphere, the fashions and what a classic country racing event really is.

The fashion stakes at Towong are high, the Eau de parfum delicious, the accessories; fine jewellery and sheer hosiery, all set a scene of total elegance and a great country racing day out. Whilst there is always plenty of action on the track, the young race goers and elegant ladies also turn heads for eligible bachelors and gentlemen who have a good eye for fine form. The atmosphere is amazing!

The 2009 Towong Cup will stage a fine “Fashions on the Field” competition with the winner taking hope a prize pool of goodies including a luxurious all expenses paid metropolitan escape. Fashion categories will include; Most Elegant Lady, Miss Race Goer, Best dressed couple and for the very first time a Milliners prize for the Best Fascinator or Hat of the day.

Despite headwear being one of the hottest topics, Towong Cup is striving to recognise this fine art form at the 2009 event. The judge’s attention will be purely on the hat or headpiece design of the individual.

Emu feathers, Ostrich Blondines, Peacock Eye, or maybe it will be Pheasant feathers that will tease and tantalise the judging fashion experts? Alternatively, the feathered kind will make room for ribbons and veils, or bold use of exotic fabrics of every dimension?

“I recently attended a Towong Turf Club event to raise funds for the Jane McGrath Foundation, it was a ladies day and the fashions on display were superb. I will definitely be returning for the Towong Cup” said Kerryn Thomas, Milliner from Albury.

Whilst the odds are high for great fillies and hot fashions, the fashions also have the potential to influence and profile the Towong Race Cup as The Classic Race meeting in every define way possible. One of the greatest attractants is the friendships and spirit of the Upper Murray on this very special day.

The horses have pounded the track since 1871, and today the Towong Race Course is by far one of the most picturesque racing destinations in the State. The Heritage listed Snowy Mountains paint a gorgeous backdrop and the 100 year old grand stand remains one of the finest ladies of all time.

There is a sense of classic style, a little dirt up the side of the Mercedes, a picnic hamper full of fresh regional produce, and flowing champagne. It’s the states finest Country Racing day out, enjoy! Towong Cup is a real winner for all.
