Adventure Victoria Rafting, based in Corryong, has sister companies in Canada and Nepal. With more than 30 years of whitewater experience, they offer 1-4 day journeys on the Upper Murray River (Murray Gates) and 1-2 day experiences in the Mitta Gorge. According to Ted Bilton from Wildwater Adventures on the Kicking Horse River in Canada: "the Murray Gates provides some of the best technical rafting in the world combined with incredible wildlife and majestic scenery." Picture this ... steep, grade 3-4 rapids on the Upper Murray. The action starts immediately as rafters negotiate seemingly non-existent passageways through rock-strewn corridors such as "sharks tooth" and "Himalayan wrap". Rapids comprising of tight chutes, tall drops and immense boulders continue for 8km ... the action and fun simply doesn't stop! The lower section of the river mellows to grade 2-3 rapids, allowing time for relaxation and the opportunity to enjoy the pristine alpine flora and fauna. Rugged deep canyons, crystal clear water, pools, side streams and waterfalls characterise this wilderness area. Platypus, kangaroos, wombats, deer and a range of bird life are often seen. An overnight stay at the authentic High Country cattle station Tom Groggin adds to every Upper Murray rafting experience. This property is surrounded by the Alpine National Park, with its native animal and birdlife. The legend of Jack Reilly, the original Man from Snowy River, lives on ... this is his country! In May, Adventure Victoria will market its High Country rafting experiences to international travel wholesale agents at the Australian Tourism Exchange. Adventure Victoria (in conjunction with the Australian Tourism Development Fund, Tourism Victoria, NE Victorian Tourism Inc, Mansfield and Murrindindi Shires) are committed to a $400,000 marketing project. This venture aims to attract international visitors to Victoria's High Country, for rafting, horse riding, abseiling, mountain biking, four wheel driving and walking. Many other High Country businesses such as restaurants, cafes, wineries, galleries, accommodation and transport providers will benefit from increased tourism.
