Friday June 27 High up in the Snowy Mountains, a famous Australian author, Elyne Mitchell, wrote a series of children's' novels and the world acclaimed story of The Silver Brumby. Elyne's works of fiction were ideally set in the Snowy Mountains around Corryong, Thredbo and Cascade Hut; areas populated by wild brumbies and abundant wildlife, native and feral. The landscape provided the inspiration and Elyne called Towong Station home for most of her adult life. "The locals are thrilled that the Upper Murray is home one of Australia's finest literacy greats. Elyne was loved by the local community and her wonderful children's stories remain endearing to the hearts of many children across the world. The Friends of the Corryong Library are keen to continue to support literacy development in the Upper Murray so have decided to develop a writing award for females over 15," said Sue Sullivan, member of Friends of the Corryong Library. With the ongoing support of Mrs. Honor Auchinlek (daughter of the late E. Mitchell), and Towong Shire's recent donation of $1500 the award is likely to attract entrants from across the region. The inaugural 2008 award also coincides with the 50 year anniversary celebration of the original release of The Silver Brumby. The inaugural Elyne Mitchell Rural Women's Writing Award allows aspiring writers to compete for this prestigious opportunity. The award is auspiced by the Friends of the Corryong Library and offers writers $1000 in each category for a 2500-word story that reflects some aspect of rural Australian life. "Towong Shire Council is thrilled to be part of the Elyne Mitchell Rural Women's Writing Award to not only commemorates Elyne's life and work, but because it encourages rural women to write their stories," said John Mitchell, Mayor for Towong Shire Council. The competition has two categories: "Emerging Writers" aged 15-25 and an "Open" section for women over 25. Each winning entry will be announced at a ceremony on World Rural Woman's Day on the 15th of October, each receiving $1000. For further information bookmark www.ElyneMitchell.com or write to P.O.
